"Are you an Angel" the girl asked amazed.
"No"
"But..." she began "then what the hell are you?"
"A monster" the boy said quietly, without expression or care.
"You saved me!" she protested, "Monsters don't save people!"
The boy shrugged. "This is the first time I was able to stop it"
"Stop what?"
The boy did not answer.
"What are you trying to stop?" the girl pressed on. Her eyes showed excitement and fear. This bothered the boy. Fear is what everyone saw when they looked at him. Fear.
'I'm trying to stop the future" he said abruptly. The feathered appendages protruding from his upper back began to twitch as he looked down at the city below.
He could jump, leap off and escape, not answer any more of the girl's questions. However, somehow he felt obliged to stay. This was the first time someone had laid eyes on him and not run away.
"What do you mean by 'stop the future?'" the girl asked.
"I want to stop the visions. Stop the death. Stop everything that I am."
The girl stared blankly into the boys eyes for several minutes. "What does that mean?"
The boy shrugged, a deep, unearthly sadness in his eyes, "Bye!"
And with that, he jumped off the roof of the skyscraper, letting himself drop into the bright florescent air around him.
Then, he let his wings snap open, feeling a gust of wind sweep through his feathers. He began to rise, slowly, taking in the colors and the lights of the city below.
The boy had always liked lights. So beautiful.
As the boy flew higher and higher over the thousands of buildings that made up the metropolis, he glanced back at the girl. She had not moved, her eyes fixed on him in amazement.
The boy winced as if in pain, and then began to beat his wings faster. He let his newfound speed wash away all suffering.
Each flap, like shedding a layer of his misery.
Just as his mind began to clear and become numb, he saw it.
Images flashing and changing before his eyes, dancing like pagans around a fire.
Pictures of a bridge collapsing. Of automobiles falling into the water below. Of death and suffering.
It's going to happen in ten minutes.
The boy had to be there. He always had to be there.
Just a little story-thing I had written a long, long time ago.
It's inspired slighly on the mythology of the Mothman, a winged being that was spotted around several disasters, some believe he was the cause, and other's saw him as trying to warn people.
I took the latter.
Anyhow, enjoy, if possible.
